Dr. Md. Shahdat Hossain
Dr. Md. Shahdat Hossain Professor, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Shahdat Hossain was born on 1 January 1967 in a village  of Tangail District. He secured 9th position in Secondary School Certificate Examination (Agriculture Branch) of Dhaka Board in 1981. After completing his college education in Dahanbary Collge in 1983 from the same board he took admission in the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, from where he earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Biochemistry. He then went to Shimane Medical University, Japan and earned his Ph.D. in 1999 from the Department of Physiology-I. His research work was on the effect of fish oil components, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6, omega-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5, omega-3) on hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, platelet aggregation, membrane physicochemical properties, brain oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Back in Bangladesh he joined the Jahangirnagar University as a lecturer as one of three founder members of the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2001. His tremendous hard work helped the newly formed department to make it as one of the most potential departments of the University, which is now running with 28 faculties and >9 staffs and high standard laboratories. He was promoted to the post of the professor in 2010. He also served as the chairman of the department.

Dr. Hossain sees the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as a living novel, where a story starts and ends with numerous thrill. Our talking, listening, seeing, singing, staring, stimulation, response, our sorrowfulness, our happiness, our decision to commit suicide, a prey’s fight or flight from its predator, the wobbling of a caterpillar, a butterfly’s erratic flight around flowers or even the closeness of a tiny bacterium towards a nutrient molecule—all these physiological processes and behaviors underlie Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Molecules crosstalk by bonding/nonbonding interactions. The cell, which consists of billions of molecules, communicates by signals. Cells’ communications are manifested at different tissues/ organ levels, which ultimately constitute the organisms, like us and our behaviors and the way of thinking for which we go ahead. These are of a great mystery, where hundreds of thousands of molecular episodes are happening.  As a teacher, he always thinks about the great philosophy of these molecular machineries that lead to the (molecular)movies at the cellular levels and comprises our body and keep us alive. He says we are nothing but the composite behaviors of these molecules and/or cells. Currently, he is leading different projects. Some of them are aimed at amelioration of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease in model rats and neurotoxic effect(s) of heavy metals on brain proteins. As a recognition, Professor Hossain was honored as a recipient of the Gold Medal award of the Bangladesh Academy of Science (BAS) and Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) award.
